Ten advance in free throw tourney

Valley Stream Knights host second round of competition

Winners from the first round of the Knights of Columbus-sponsored Free Throw Competition gathered at Holy Name of Mary School last Saturday morning to try their skills again. Participants had 25 chances to make as many baskets as they could.

The Father Thomas Carroll Council of Valley Stream held its preliminary round on Jan. 30. Winners from there, and from Knights of Columbus chapters in Floral Park and Hewlett, came together on Feb. 27 for the District 20 championship. The nearly two dozen participants were narrowed down to 10 winners — one from each age group, 10-14, for boys and girls.

There was one tie in the 11-year-old boys’ division. Timmy Wolff and William O’Brien each made an equal number of baskets, so they went to a best of five competition. They tied again and shot another five times, with Wolff coming out on top.

The winners in each age division will now move on to the county finals, to be held on March 13.
