Third graders at Glen Head School host annual Wax Museum

Third graders at Glen Head Elementary brought historical icons like Michael Jackson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Babe Ruth back to life at the annual Wax Museum on April 28. The project, which incorporated social studies, ELA, and the arts, allowed for children to choose a historical figure or a celebrity from current events — who had a positive impact on the world — and play the characters during the “Changing World Exhibit.”

Students stood as “waxed” figures at their own stations without saying a word until parents, teachers, or students from other grades, pushed the imaginary button. Once someone pressed the button, students introduced their characters in the first person. They shared a biography on their character that they had perfected in class and created posters to go along with their “waxed” figure.

“We’ve held this event for many years and it’s one of the most popular events that third graders look forward to,” said third grade teacher Jennine Bernesby. She added that they spent several weeks working on their projects at home and in school for the special presentation.

Students practiced their public speaking skills with elocutionist Elise May. Then they presented their characters with all their heart. “This is a combination of acting, speaking, and presentation skills,” she said. “They learn all of the techniques such as maintaining eye contact, projecting their voices, and controlling their breathing.”

Along with mastering their character’s poses and signature quotes, students also learned about the important events and movements that defined each historical figure.
