Town of Hempstead funds auxiliary police

The Town of Hempstead will again partner with local civil defense auxiliary police units, including 22 unincorporated and incorporated communities. The resolution approved by the town board on April 2 increased funding to $2,000 in unincorporated areas and to $1,000 for incorporated areas.

“I am proud to have proposed an increase in funding for civil defense auxiliary police units to $2,000 in unincorporated areas and to $1,000 for incorporated areas,” Councilman Bruce Blakeman stated in a news release. “The activities of the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police preserve the public peace and good order while promoting safety and general welfare of the community.”

The Five Towns, Baldwin, Bellmore, East Meadow, Elmont, Lakeview, Levittown, Merrick, North Bellmore, Oceanside, Point Lookout, Roosevelt, Seaford, South Hempstead, Uniondale, Wantagh and West Hempstead, will receive money for equipment, recruitment and training.

East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Stewart Manor and Valley Stream will receive a $500 bump, also for equipment, recruitment and training.

“As Nassau County combats an ongoing opioid crisis, the Civil Auxiliary Police is an important community resource to respond to potential overdoses and other life-and-death situations,” Councilman Anthony D’Esposito stated in the same release.
