Village of Valley Stream enters agreement to repave Roosevelt

The Village of Valley Stream board of trustees approved an intermunicipal agreement on Nov. 19 to re-asphalt Roosevelt Avenue, which utility companies have been tearing up over the past few months to repair and replace water and gas mains.

Under the agreement, New York American Water and National Grid would pay the village to re-asphalt Roosevelt Avenue. The street had been repaved about five years ago, at which point the concrete and aprons were replaced.

“We have this agreement for us to do the whole thing and use their cut,” Mayor Ed Fare said. He added that, weather permitting, the work should be completed by the end of the year.

The problem with the road started earlier this year, with New York American Water employees working in late October to fix an abandoned leaky service line on S. Franklin and Roosevelt avenues. Additionally, National Grid employees are in the process of replacing and reinforcing a main along Roosevelt Avenue.

That work has left the road uneven. Ann Massa-Garofalo wrote on a local Facebook page on Nov. 20 that Roosevelt Avenue is closed almost every day, and Michele Shipley commented that her daily commute along Roosevelt Avenue is “like a video game every day.”

Dodge, bump, swerve,” Shipley continued. “[It] keeps me on my toes.”

As the work continues, National Grid said it has employed more crews to the scene to hot-patch the road.

Responding to an inquiry, Wendy Ladd, a National Grid spokeswoman said, “We appreciate the resident’s patience while we complete this important project, so we can provide safe reliable service to our customers.”
