Wantagh students celebrate Native American life

Posted

Wantagh fourth-graders at Forest Lake Elementary School participated in the school’s annual Native American Day on Jan. 11, and returned to their classrooms with a greater understanding of Native American life and culture.

Throughout the celebration, students dressed in traditional Native American costumes and participated in various cultural activities, which included wampum making, story and message writing on hide, Johnnycake eating and participating in several games that originated from the Native American culture.

Native American Day marked a fun end to a social studies unit that taught Forest Lake students about Native American life, as well as how the Iroquois Tribe assisted the Pilgrims through their first harsh winter in what would become New York State.
