Wheeler Avenue hosts Multicultural Fair

Parents and students at Wheeler Avenue Elementary school got a taste (both literally and figuratively) of culture from the increasingly diverse Valley Stream community at the school’s Multicultural Fair on Nov. 20.

Organized by Wheeler English as a New Language Teachers Marcella Capobianco and Jennifer Cymbler, speech teacher Ewa Jedynak and art teacher Christine DiDio, with help from the Wheeler PTA, the event invited families in Valley Stream to show off prominent aspects of their respective cultures, from dress, to food and music.

“Multicultural night is a way for our school to celebrate all of the diversity in the community,” Wheeler Principal John Frias said.

Cultures represented included Dominican, Haitian, Chinese, Peruvian and Korean among many others, and representatives from each divided into stations throughout the Wheeler gym.

After, families in attendance were invited to the school auditorium for performances from different cultures by South High School students.

“It was fantastic,” Frias said of the event.
