Though the Saturday night showing of the movie "E.T." was postponed due to the forecast rain, the first day of the 28th annual Five Towns Community Chest Fair in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park was full of fun in the sun with rides, games, food and music.

Camp Barrett, the village of Valley Stream's summer camp program, held its annual Carnival Day on Aug. 3. There was a bounce castle, dunk tank, slip and slide, face painting and numerous carnival games.

Valley Stream's village summer camp program hosted its annual Color Wars competition on July 19 at Barrett Park. Campers divided into the blue and red teams and competed in a variety of field day-like activities including a tug-of-war, obstacle course and a variety of relay races.

Celebrating Baldwin's big day

As the sun began to set on Saturday night, I found myself in a familiar trail of cars headed towards Baldwin Park to catch the 17th Annual Baldwin Day celebration. At the gates, smiling, orange-vested officials directed drivers and pedestrians away from caution-taped areas and towards safe parking and bring-your-own-blanket picnic style seating for the evening’s festivities.

A full court press against cancer

Shootout Cancer, a non-profit organization which raises funds to assist those battling cancer, hosted its fifth annual basketball event on June 16 at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst to raise money for families afflicted by the disease. Participants donated $10 and enjoyed basketball activities and competitions while spectators donated $5 to the cause.
