John and Susan LaBarbera decided that this year’s golf-outing fundraiser would be the last, having built a quarter-million-dollar fund that will continue the scholarship for at least 50 years.

‘It’s been a labor of love’

Several hundred friends and acquaintances have gathered every Columbus Day for the past 10 years for the annual golf-outing fundraiser and luncheon in Johnny LaBarbera’s memory. On Monday, the tradition ended with its final installment at Douglaston Golf Course in Queens, and with an accrued quarter million dollars in the bank that will continue to have an impact for local high school students for the next half-century. more

One day about 50 years ago, John DeGrace saw a young boy while riding his bike on West Valley Stream Boulevard. “He said, ‘Hi John!’” DeGrace recounted, “and waved to me.” Little did he know that this “outgoing, friendly person” that he saw would become one of his dearest friends, and this year’s honoree at the Valley Stream Republican Club’s annual golf outing, Donald Steinert. more
