The students paid tribute to their classmate, Chris Schroeder, who died of leukemia less than three weeks before graduation. Each of the 243 graduates wore a purple ribbon in his honor and a purple balloon was included in every batch of red and white balloons. His name was included on the graduate list in the program and Henry presented his parents, Wally and Carole, with his diploma at the end of the ceremony.

Throughout graduation, members of Valley Stream Fire Department Engine Company No. 2 stood nearby holding Schroeder’s firefighter gear.

Class President Nihal Majumder said how his six years at South have flown by, and he has so many treasured memories since the start of seventh grade. “South is such a part of who I am,” he said. “The relationships I’ve built with classmates, best friends and teachers are going to be unforgettable in my life.”
