American Legion Andrew Fatscher Post 854 in Valley Stream hosted its annual Veterans Day service on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

The ceremony was outside the hall and featured speeches from American Legion leaders, a color guard and the unveiling of a refurbished legion seal. Post Commander John Faust accepted the seal from Joe Leone, president of the Sons of the American Legion.

Nov. 11 became a legal holiday in 1938 as a day dedicated to world peace. The date was chosen because it marked the end of World War I, then known as the Great War. In 1954, it became a date to honor American veterans of all wars.
