Here comes Santa Claus

Valley Stream’s Winterfest celebration is scheduled for Dec. 2 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event starts with children writing letters to Santa at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library and continues with Santa arriving at Village Hall on a fire truck to help light the Christmas tree. Mayor Ed Fare will then read to the children. Event includes movies, prizes and refreshments.

Holiday season lecture

Ronald Brown will lead participants in a lesson about how New York invented the holiday season at the Elmont Memorial Library on Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. The “CHRISMAHANUKWANZAKAH” lecture will cover everything from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square.

Friday flicks

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library will present the movie “August: Osage County” on Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. The 2013 film stars Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney, and delves into the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, who return to the Oklahoma house they grew up in after a family crisis, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Rated R.
