The town's sanitation and recycling pickup for Friday was cancelled. Murray said collections would occur on the next regularly scheduled date.

With most communities receiving between five and eight inches of snow, Murray said, it’s important that residents work with the town to keep themselves safe. They can do so by staying off roads if possible, to avoid accidents and to ensure that road crews have a clear path as they plow. Under town code, residents are asked to remove cars from town roads when a snow emergency is in effect.

Murray also asked that residents not shovel their snow into public streets, as this creates more work for road crews.

The town also opened a dozen warming centers for Friday and Saturday for anyone seeking refuge from the cold.

"Every snowstorm, you wait for the storm to stop and for part two of operations to begin," Murray said. "We are still in the thick of phase one. We are playing defense at this point, plowing with the snow drifting back in the street. In a few more hours, the storm will pass, and then we will do the final cleanup."
