The Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides financial help for elderly and low-income residents to keep their homes warm in the winter months, began on Nov. 16. Households in need can apply online.

Eligible households can receive a one-time benefit of up to $625 this winter depending on income, household size and heating source. A household of four can earn up to $51,792, or $4,316 per month, and still qualify for assistance.

The program is federally funded and is overseen by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Applications can be accessed at myBenefits.ny.gov.
