Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead has 12 pools offering swimming instruction for children and adults this summer, and while it’s too late to get in on those, there are still some spots remaining in fall classes at those facilities. Winter classes are also available. Instruction is offered for six levels of skill, from beginners to those well beyond the basics. Participants who aren’t members of the pools at which the classes are taught pay a daily admission fee. Proof of age and residency are required at registration.

The town pools that offer American Red Cross-certified swimming instruction are:

• Averill Boulevard Park in Elmont
• Echo Park in West Hempstead
• Forest City Park in Wantagh
• Hewlett Point Park in Bay Park
• Levittown Pools in Levittown and Hicksville
• Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore
• Oceanside Park in Oceanside
• Rath Park in Franklin Square
• Roosevelt Pool in Roosevelt
• Town Park at Malibu in Lido Beach
• Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow
• Walker Memorial Park in Lakeview.

For information or to register, call the Town of Hempstead Aquatics Division at (516) 572-0501. Pool office hours are noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Nassau County

The Nassau County Aquatic Center offers Red Cross swimming lessons for children ranging in age from 6 months into their teens who are county residents. Classes are usually offered seven days a week, with 10-week morning and afternoon classes available throughout the year.

The county also offers adult lessons for beginning to intermediate swimmers, along with “terrified of the water” classes. These are limited to 10 people, and offer a “safe and nurturing environment,” according to the county.

Fall classes will begin Monday, Sept. 8. For more information, contact swim lesson coordinator Trish Wygand Higgins at (516) 572-0509, or email her at Phiggins@nassaucountyny.gov.

The Nassau County Aquatic Center is in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, on Merrick Avenue, south of Stewart Avenue. The 80,000-square-foot facility features a pool that is 68 meters long and has three movable bulkheads. The pool setup varies from day to day, with 50-meter, 25-meter and 25-yard lap lanes.
The pool’s shallow section is available for recreational or free swimming, and is perfect for water exercise, therapeutic swimming or “water walking.” For more information, call (516) 572-0501.
