Just like the NFL, Nassau County high school teams will be kicking off the 2013 season on a Thursday. Every team will be in action this Thursday afternoon or evening, Sept. 12, beginning at 4:30 p.m. with 16 games including four-time defending Conference II champion Garden City traveling to Calhoun.

Roosevelt is the lone defending conference champion to open the season at home. The Rough Riders, who seek a third straight crown, host Valley Stream North in a rematch of last year's Conference IV title game at 5:30 p.m.

Also seeking a three-peat is Lawrence in Conference III. The Golden Tornadoes and record-setting quarterback Joe Capobianco travel to Manhasset for a 5:30 p.m. start.

Defending Conference I champ Farmingdale goes to Plainview for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

Other key Week 1 matchups:
Clarke at West Hempstead, 4:30 p.m.
Carey at South Side, 4:30 p.m.
Mepham at Wantagh, 4:30 p.m.
Long Beach at MacArthur, 7 p.m.
Hewlett at Glen Cove, 7 p.m.

*Note: the season will begin Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. with a Conference III game between Sewanhaka and Lynbrook. It will be played at Long Beach Middle School since the new turf field at Marion Street School won't be ready.
