Doreen Page, Cubmaster of Pack 106 in North Valley Stream, said it is an activity the boys look forward to each year. She said they enjoy the activities and spending time with their friends.
“It’s about teamwork, doing things together, hoping to teach them some leadership,” she said of the Camporee. “It’s a great event.”
Page added that it gives her scouts a chance to see some of the Boy Scout troops they can advance to when they finish their Cub Scout years.
For Joshua Thomson, of Troop 116, this year’s Camporee was a bit different for him. This was his first time at the event as a Boy Scout, which meant added responsibilities. “You set up a tent on your own,” he said. “When you’re a Cub Scout, your parents set up the tent.”
Thomson, who said putting up a tent was not that hard, added that he likes sleeping outdoors, cooking and working on his merit badges.
This year’s camp patch was created by Girl Scout Alexa Stevens. Her design was also featured on T-shirts given out to all the campers. Everyone also received a personal headlight emblazoned with “Valley Stream Camporee 2014.”
