Serial robber hits Carvel in North Valley Stream

A man responsible for eight armed robberies across Nassau County in recent weeks robbed a Carvel shop in North Valley Stream on Tuesday night, police said. They don’t believe it’s the same man who committed similar crimes around Valley Stream since February 2015.

“At this point, we do not see a connection,” said Public Information Office Commander Richard LeBrun. “That could change over time, but at this point we don’t think that it is. That was more of a targeted location. This seems to be more spread out countywide.”

LeBrun said there are “several indicators” that separate the latest pattern, but said he could not discuss them.

The robbery on Tuesday occurred at 9:33 p.m. at the Carvel store, at 1551 Dutch Broadway. An employee was alone inside when a man with a 6-inch kitchen knife entered, walked behind the counter and told the employee to open the register. The victim complied and the man took an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing east on Dutch Broadway. No injuries were reported.

The man was described as black and about 35 years old, between 5-feet-8 and 6 feet tall and about 170 lbs., wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, baggy blue jeans, tan work boots, black gloves and dark glasses. He uses either a black or a red scarf to cover his face.

LeBrun said that surveillance footage shows the man monitoring the interiors and exteriors of the establishments he’s robbed, apparently waiting until no customers are present. Prior to the Carvel robbery, the man hit six Dunkin’ Donuts, a 7-Eleven and a Subway. Those stores were in New Hyde Park, Plainview, Old Bethpage, East Meadow, Merrick, Oceanside and Massapequa.
