Southern State crash kills two

Two Queens teenagers were killed early Tuesday morning in a one car crash that occurred near exit 15 of the Southern State Parkway in Valley Stream at 1:15 a.m., state police said.

Joseph Kelly and Justin Johnson, both 19, of Laurelton, were killed in the crash. Kelly “lost control of the vehicle, mounting the right shoulder and striking the Franklin Avenue overpass,” State Police Senior Investigator Joseph U. DeMaria said in a statement.

After striking the overpass Kelly’s vehicle, a Dodge Neon, “became fully engulfed in flames, trapping both occupants inside,” according to the statement. The Elmont Fire Department reported to the scene of the crash, and extinguished the fire. The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

The crash remains under investigation by state police.
