Several local organizations and businesses pitched in for a day of cleaning and making other improvements at Valley Stream State Park on May 2, as part of a new statewide initiative called “I Love My Park Day.”

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Rose Harvey invited local residents and members of Valley Stream Cub Scout Pack 109,  Elmont/Franklin Square Boy Scout 294, Girl Scouts Troop 1649, Masjid Hamza, Valley Stream Home Depot, Applebees and other community groups to volunteer for the event. It was among 75 that occurred across the state, according to the office of Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages.

Volunteers picked up trash from parkland and streambeds, planted gardens, restored trails and built several park benches and flower beds.
