Those who grew up in New York City understand the lure of authentic Italian ices, sweet shoppes, and candy stores. Frankie and Marcella Forte have set out to bring Long Island the total package, memorabilia and all.

Recently married and now living in Elmont, Frankie grew up in the Bronx, and Marcella, in Queens. They wanted to start their lives together as partners in a business that reflected their city backgrounds. With a lot of research, brainstorming and creativity, they came up with NYC Ices, an open-all-year shop that offers more than cold summer treats.

Accented with graffiti-covered walls, the store itself is fun — a collection of New York City themes and memorabilia. There’s an antique subway turnstile, a traffic light, subway photographs, items related to New York sports teams, and a spectacular mural. Customers can sit on chairs, stools or a park bench. There’s a TV too, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a treat.

As for ices, they offer 100 flavors, which include 19 of the own original and exclusive recipes, with NYC style names. Among the basic flavors are familiar ones such as Banana Fudge, Cotton Candy, Rainbow Cookie, Cannoli, Tiramisu, Strawberry Cheesecake, Jelly Ring, Smores and Chocolate Chip Brownie. Their signature flavors don names like Bronx Bomber, Crazi Cabbie, Ferry Liscious, The Big Apple, Broadway Crunch, Luscious Liberty, and Fuggetaaboutit.

Their ices come in both water and cream flavors, plus sugar-free selections. They also serve ice cream, smoothies, frozen coffee (like a slushy), milkshakes, soda and bottled water. Anyone with a sweet tooth will enjoy the chocolate and candy collections.

NYC Ices doubles as a bake shop. Among the cakes and cookies are cupcakes, brownies and cake pops. Having a party? Anything can be delivered ($30 minimum), from a made-to-order specialty cake to party-sized tubs of Italian ices.

The brand new shop celebrated its grand opening on May 30. As it will be open for every season, warmer items will be offered in the colder months. But you’ll always be able to satisfy your yearning for Italian ices. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.
