Pumpkin painting contest

Children from 5 to 12-years-old are invited to come down to Arthur J. Hendrickson Park for some Halloween hijinks on Oct. 22 (rain date Oct. 29). Children ages 5 to 8 can paint at 10 a.m., while the 9 to 12 age group will have their turn at 11:30 a.m. The pumpkins will be judged based on criteria of being the scariest and funniest. Paint, pumpkins and brushes will be supplied and all participants receive a T-shirt. Reservations needed. Call 516-872-6003 for more information.

Music of Motown

Cody Childs and the Ladies of Soul will perform at the Elmont Library Theater on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The afternoon will bring attendees back to the days of Motown Company with classic songs such as “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “My Guy,” “Just My Imagination,” “Jimmy Mack” and “Sugar Pie Honeybunch” being performed. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Halloween costume contest

The Valley Stream recreation department presents the 2016 Halloween costume contest on Oct. 22, with a rain date scheduled for Oct. 29 at Arthur J. Hendrickson Park. Children 3 and under will show off their ghoulish gear at 1:30 p.m., while children age 4-6 will go on at 2 and children 7 and older are scheduled for 2:30. All entrants will receive participation trophies and costumes will be judged on scariest, most original and funniest.
