Thunderettes kick off competition season

Three out of the four Grace Thunderettes Show Squad teams placed in their first competition of the season in Smithtown on March 20.

“They were totally awesome,” said Nancy Wasek, the squad’s director. “They were fantastic.”

The teams of three to four girls, sectioned based on age and ability, performed coordinated routines to music while dancing and twirling their batons. Two teams earned first place and one team earned second.

The competition also has an individual component, and 13 of the program’s 20 members took home individual medals for their solo routines. Wasek and her daughter Elizabeth coordinate the program, which practices all year.

“Everybody is, like, all geared up for the state competition,” Wasek said. “We’re working harder because they want to win.”

The state competition takes place in May.
