Even though “Esperanza Rising” is a fictitious story, the reading students have been doing to supplement it is not. DiMango said the book touches on so many topics that are relevant to the fifth-grade curriculum. That is why she has no regrets that students have been reading it, and re-reading it, since September. “Three months on the book is a long time to keep going back,” DiMango said, “but it’s not time wasted.”
