Update on Valley Stream school closings

Posted

Valley Stream school officials say they are hoping to reopen all of the community's 14 schools on Monday, Nov. 5, after being closed for an entire week due to Hurricane Sandy.

An official announcement will be made this weekend. It will depend on how quickly power and communication systems are restored. According to officials, electricity was back on at every building except North High School as of Friday afternoon. There were also problems with phones throughout the four districts.

The decision will also depend on the condition of the roads in the community. While trees and power lines have mostly been cleared, several traffic lights remain out making travel dangerous.

It is expected that Tuesday, Nov. 6 will be a regular day of school. It was initially scheduled as a Superintendent's Conference Day for staff only, however students will be expected to report to school.
