Vehicle smash-and-grab near school

Posted

A woman dropping off her daughter at the Brooklyn Avenue School on Monday returned to her vehicle at around 8:20 a.m. to discover the front passenger window broken and her bag stolen from the seat inside.

Sheenu Singh said she parked her 2014 Hyundai Sante Fe at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Brookside Drive and walked her daughter to the building. She was away from the SUV for about three minutes, she said.

“People need to see this,” she said. “Everybody walks through that area to drop off their kids at school.”

Holy Trinity Nursery School is also in the vicinity.

Singh filed a police report and said that a homeowner’s surveillance camera captured the incident. The footage was anonymously submitted to the 5th Precinct. The video appeared to show the suspect watching Singh and her daughter from a parked car, she said, before he approached her vehicle and smashed the window.

The bag contained a watch and several credit cards. Singh said that her bank notified her that attempts were made to use her credit cards at a nearby Sunoco gas station and Target.

Police are investigating the incident.

“The school was very helpful,” she said, adding that Principal Scott Comis and other parents reached out to her to make sure that she was okay.
