WWII vet, local volunteer

Marshall C. Anderson, of Valley Stream, passed away on Thursday, April 16. He was 97.

Anderson was born on June 23, 1917 in Brooklyn to Arthur A. and Edythe B. Anderson. The family moved to Valley Stream in 1940. His siblings were the late Robert M. Anderson of Sussex, N. J. and Dorothy A. Joyce of Dallastown, PA.

Anderson served in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the Army Infantry. He studied art at Cooper Union in New York City and applied his talents and training in commercial art projects in New York City.

Anderson delivered food for Meals on Wheels for nearly 25 years and volunteered with the Valley Stream Historical Society at the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. The Village of Valley Stream recognized him for his volunteer efforts, once naming him “Volunteer of the Year.”

Anderson is survived by two nieces: Gail Bjorklund of Williamsburg, Va.; and Susan Lamb, of Pittsford, N.Y.; their children, Kristin (Bjorklund) MacMannis, of Portsmouth, R.I.; and Devin and Connor Lamb, of Pittsford.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 24 at Grace United Methodist Church, 21 S. Franklin Avenue in Valley Stream, followed by a reception in the Burt Keller Room at the church.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church to support the Educational Scholarship program.
