We need to make changes to the Common Core

Recently, the New York State United Teachers — the state’s largest teachers union — withdrew its support for the Common Core because of the way it is being implemented in the state. The National Education Association agreed with NYSUT, saying that New York needs to take the time to get it right.

And of course we do. Doesn’t our children’s education merit the time and dedication needed to make sure we’re doing things in the best way possible?

Complaints by parents and educators to Dr. John B. King Jr., the commissioner of the state Education Department, have fallen on deaf ears. Our hope now is that legislators in Albany will take up the cause and do their best to make sure the Common Core is done right. We cannot afford to implement this new curriculum when our students and educators aren’t fully prepared for it, or we may get it wrong altogether.
