Wheeler Avenue students get 'fooducated'

hird and fourth-grade students at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School were given a lesson in healthy eating on May 7 during an interactive presentation held at the school.

The students learned about the importance of selecting healthy foods during an iGame4 presentation led by Andrew McBride. McBride first showed students a video educating them about different types of milk, grains and other nutrients. Students were then given an iPad Mimi for a demonstration of Fooducate, an app that allows users to scan grocery items to help determine their nutritional value.

The app scans each item and rates it from A-D based on the food’s nutritional value. Users can also use the app to find healthier alternatives to the food that was scanned.

Fourth-grade teacher Diane Gorman said the program was intended to teach students about the ease and importance of making the right dietary choices.

“The goal of this program was to empower students to make healthy choices in their diets and to inform them about the healthy alternatives available,” she said. “It’s also something that can be expanded at home.”
