The hospital’s trustees recently sent a three-page letter to State Health Commissioner Dr. Niraz Shah, offering a plan to downsize the hospital from 162 beds to approximately 80. A full-scale hospital is just no longer justifiable or economically feasible. But in a large, isolated community such as Long Beach, a first-class emergency facility is a must. As we are now at the peak of summer, with a large influx of people visiting the Long Beach community, I hope an agreement is reached sooner rather than later.
