The Merrick Fire Department responded to a fire that tore through a bedroom in a house on Bayview Street, off of Merrick Road in Merrick. All occupants self-evacuated with their two pet birds, sustaining no injuries.

The department received a call at 2:18 p.m. by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from the window, according to its spokesperson Ron Luparello.

Chief Paul Scolieri was first on scene to report a working fire on the second floor of the house. On arriving, the department stretched a hose line to the bedroom and doused the flames before the fire could spread.

“We knocked out the fire rather quickly,” Luparello said, adding that it was out within ten minutes.

According to the homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, the possible cause involved a lit candle in the bedroom.

The Bellmore and North Bellmore fire departments were also on scene and the Freeport, North Merrick and North Bellmore fire departments were on stand by.
