Damaged power lines caused power failures in Valley Stream

Damaged power lines caused the sporadic power outages throughout Valley Stream last week, according to Jeremy Walsh, a spokesman for PSEG Long Island.

He said that on Oct. 14, a balloon got caught in a power line on N. Corona Avenue near W. Fenimore Street, which caused two circuit breakers at a substation to fail. “Once it became apparent that these intermittent breaker trips were more than isolated incidents, we dispatched a crew to patrol the circuit,” Walsh said, adding that the issue was resolved by the next night.

Then, on Oct. 16, Walsh said that vines leaning on a power line on Greenway Boulevard caused it to fail. “Our crews responded as quickly and safely as possible to replace the power line and address the vegetation,” he said. “The customers affected were restored in phases, with everyone back on in just over two hours.”

The power outages aggravated several residents throughout the greater Valley Stream area.

In North Valley Stream, Kristina Howley said her house had about six power outages last week, each of which would occur after 10 p.m. “I would wake up to my refrigerator and washer/dryer beeping ‘power failure,’ and the clocks blinking on the stove and microwave,” she said.

In central Valley Stream, Chrissy O’Toole said she was annoyed when she experienced back to back power outages that would last a second each. And in Gibson, Carol Lindner said that about three times last week, her lights were flickering on and off.
