Students at the Holy Name of Mary School screamed as the eighth-grade class stepped onto the court for the school’s annual Faculty v. Eighth-Grade Volleyball Game to kick off Catholic Schools Week on Jan. 25.

Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States that started in 1974. This year’s theme, according to the National Catholic Educational Association, is “Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed.”

“We all do it together, every Catholic school in the nation,” said Principal Pamela Sanders. She said that the annual event seeks to promote and bring attention to Catholic education.

Holy Name continued Catholic Schools Week with an open house and Mass on Sunday, a sock collection for the Interfaith Nutritional Network and a soup drive for the parish outreach pantry on Monday, a tour of the new Valley Stream courthouse on Tuesday, a Math Bee on Wednesday, a Career Day on Thursday and the school’s production of “Beauty and the Best Jr.” on Friday and Saturday.
