North High School alumni return for 50th reunion

Alumni from North High School’s class of 1968 roamed the halls of the school they attended from the time they were 12-years-old until they were 18 on Sept. 22, pointing at their former classrooms and sharing stories about their former teachers.

“Being in the school just elicited so many memories,” said Sheila Borgese, the chair of the Class of 1968’s 50th Reunion Planning Committee. “It was almost irreverent being at the school.”

As part of the tour, which was led by newly minted Principal Rachel Green, the alumni sat at desks and tried out with some of the school’s newer technology. When they entered the cafeteria, they also remembered that that was where they had heard about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Green said that she was taken by the alumni’s story about the assassination. “She had us crying,” Borgese said.

The reunion also included a softball game on the school’s fields. The event culminated with a check presentation for more than $4,000 that would fund security upgrades to the school and a reunion dinner at the Melville Marriott. The next day, the group had breakfast from 8:15 a.m. and lasting until noon.

“Fifty years melted instantly,” Borgese said. “Once they were together, they didn’t want to leave.”
