Celebrating Tomie dePaola at the library

Children in kindergarten through second grade can celebrate the life and works of children’s author and illustrator Tomie dePaola on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. Registration is required with preference given to Valley Stream cardholders. For more information, call (516) 825 – 6422.

‘Suburban trees’ lecture at village hall

The Valley Stream Lecture Series is kicking off again this year with a lecture by Vinnie Drzewucki from the Cornell Cooperative Extension on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m at the Valley Stream Performing Arts Center in village hall. Drzewucki is an ISA certified arborist and is the author of “Gardening in Deer Country.” He will be discussing how to take care of suburban trees. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Chair yoga at the community center

The Valley Stream Community Center will be hosting another chair yoga class on Oct. 19 at 1:15 p.m. Chair yoga encourages proper breathing, improved posture and is known to help with reducing blood pressure. The class cost $5 per person per class. Guests should wear comfortable clothing and are encouraged to bring one pound weights. For more information, call (516) 825- 8571.

Laugh the night away

Enjoy an evening of comedy with Chris Monty, who is joined by Kevin Israel, on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., at the Madison Theatre in Rockville Centre. A regular on New York City’s club circuit, Monty also frequently appears on TV and in movies, including “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” HBO’s short-lived “Vinyl,” “Orange is the New Black,” and recently filmed an episode of “Kevin Can Wait.” Info: (516) 323-4444 or www.madisontheatreny.org.

An evening with Alice McDermott

The esteemed novelist, an almuna of Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, returns to her alma mater to chat about her career and latest novel, “The Ninth Hour.” Her appearance at Sacred Heart, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. is her only Long Island stop on her current book tour.
