Sunday 5Ks kick off at Valley Stream State Park

New York Road Runners, a non-profit dedicated to inspiring fitness through group running events, held its inaugural 5K Open Run at Valley Stream State Park on Sunday drawing a crowd of nearly 150 people of all ages.
It was the 20th free 5K organized by NYRR and the first to be held outside of New York City. Participants can bring their children and pets, and are allowed run, jog or walk at their own pace. The 5K run/walks will be held at the park every Sunday throughout the year indefinitely.
“Since launching NYRR Open Runs in 2015, we have witnessed firsthand the benefits and positive impact that offering free access to group runs and walks can have on members of communities,” said NYRR president and chief executive officer, Michael Capiraso. “ … Our goal is to help motivate and inspire the Valley Stream community to get outside and stay active for life.”
The event was made possible through a state grant secured by Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, which allows for free Sunday parking for the Open Run.
“We encourage community members, friends and family, if you want to get active, regardless of your age or fitness level to join us at 9 a.m. on Sundays,” she said.
Runners of all ages ranging from four month olds to a 97 year old took part at the inaugural Open Run, and sign ups are open to people of all ages and fitness levels. To sign up or volunteer to help, visit openrun.nyrr.org/#valley-stream-state-park
