Village acrylic art students show off their works

Adult student artists had the opportunity to show off their finished works at the village Community Center on Aug. 20 after completing a 10-week course on acrylic painting this summer through the Valley Stream Recreation Department.
It was the first time the village had offered a painting class for adults, according to recreation attendant Matthew Khan, a self-taught artist who served as the instructor for the course.
“If you can believe it most of these people had never touched a brush before,” he said.
The class demonstrated to the students the fundamentals of working with acrylic on canvas, and each was provided a basic paint and brush kit. By the end, every participant had produced two works for him or her to show off, and hang in their homes.
Khan said he came up with the idea for the course, and wanted to foster a judgment-free space for those interested, acknowledging that learning to paint, at first, can be overwhelming.
“It’s really phenomenal how far they’ve come,” he said, and due to the program’s popularity, it’s returning this fall, this time with separate beginner and intermediate classes.
To sign up, visit the Hendrickson Park Community Center or go online at vsrec.org. There is a fee, and both residents and non-residents are welcome.
