Bands battle it out for a cause in Wantagh

Wantagh residents and other Long Islanders gathered for the second annual Battle of the Bands event last Thursday to promote heart health and honor five young professionals in the surrounding area.

The heart-pumping spectacle took place at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall off of Wantagh Avenue, and was hosted by the American Heart Association.

“The battle of the bands event was born out of the necessity for something new, fresh and different,” coordinator Meredith McCaslin said. “Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in men and women, and stroke is No. 4. Awareness is crucial for us and events like this really get the mission out there.”

The organization brought in close to 200 people for the cause and featured local Long Island bands including Six Degrees, Behind Closed Doors and Kickstart 80’s. The event also had an open bar, a buffet and various auction items.

“We are sort of representing all genres tonight,” McCaslin said. “It’s the kind of music everyone can relate to.”

The American Heart Association is the largest non-profit organization dedicated to fighting cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Of women who die each year, one in three is from heart disease, and AHA raises funds to provide proper cardiac care and training.

“Most people don’t know how easy it is to save a life,” McCaslin added. “Anybody in a community that has a philanthropic focus or cares about a cause should be proud, even if they don’t have a direct connection. They should be happy to know that these types of opportunities are coming into their backyards.”

As the night proceeded, the American Heart Association honored five young individuals and professionals for their many achievements both within and outside of the non-profit sector.
