Blessing pets at St. Frances De Chantal

Posted

Wantagh residents brought their furry friends down to St. Frances de Chantal Catholic Church on Oct. 8 for the traditional blessing of the animals service.

Parishioners gathered outside of the church, at 1309 Wantagh Ave., at noon for the ceremony. Most of their pets there were dogs, which waited patiently on leashes or in their owners’ arms for the Rev. Vincent Schifano to bless them.

Pet blessing services, which are traditionally held in early October, mark the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment who lived in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
