Circle of Hope to host third fundraiser dinner

Posted

A Bellmore-Merrick breast cancer charity will hold its largest fundraiser of the year next week.

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Circle of Hope will host “Journey for a Purpose” at 7 p.m. at the Sephardic Temple in Cedarhurst. The organization is a project of Chabad of Bellmore-Merrick-Wantagh. At the dinner, a number of local residents will be honored for their strength and service.

Melanie Rubin, of Merrick, will receive the Survivor Award. Sheri Fisch, also of Merrick, will receive the Community Service Award. And teen and adult volunteers from Bellmore-Merrick involved in Cooking for Hope will be thanked and honored as well.

This is the third time that Circle of Hope will recognize local survivors and volunteers at the annual fundraiser. Circle of Hope, headquartered in Suite 209 at 2174 Hewlett Ave. in Merrick, provides emotional support and hands-on assistance to individuals and their families coping with breast cancer and other illnesses.

Among its services are:

  • Support groups led by Jill Levine, a social worker from Merrick, in a comfortable suite where patients form educational networks and connect with others undergoing similar treatments.
  • Health seminars featuring top specialists discussing the many preventive tests and options available to patients.
  • The Teen Cooking for Hope and Meals@Home programs, which allow local teenagers to get together and learn to cook wholesome dishes. Circle of Hope volunteers then drop off the kosher meals for people in need.
  • A wig bank where patients who have lost their hair during cancer treatment can receive wigs.
  • Complimentary eye makeup lessons, courtesy of Beautiful People Salon.
  • Financial assistance to help defray the cost of treatment, assistance with transportation to and from doctors’ appointments, courtesy of Dawson Taxi, and summer camp scholarships for patients’ children.

All services are free and confidential.
