D.A.: Seaford accountant caught stealing again

A Seaford accountant was charged on June 10 with stealing $30,000 from a client just seven months after being accused of taking more than $80,000 from three others.

Scott Meyer, 48, a former partner at the accounting firm Johnson and Meyer in Huntington, was charged with third-degree grand larceny and two counts of first-degree falsifying business records, according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.

Meyer’s attorney, David Besso, said that Meyer had been accused of stealing from Nob Hill Condominiums in Ronkonkoma, but Meyer denied the allegations. He was told by Suffolk County D.A. Thomas Spota to surrender at the courthouse in Riverhead, and Meyer’s bail was set at $100,000 cash or $300,000 bond.

Besso said that health problems prove that Meyer is not responsible for his actions. “Scott has brain lesions and possible brain cancer,” Besso said. “We have a valid defense. We’ll prove that he had no intent to do any of the things that the D.A. alleges.”

Last December, Meyer was charged with six counts of second-degree grand larceny for allegedly targeting an 80-year-old Greenport man who suffers from dementia, a disabled person living in a California assisted-living facility and a not-for-profit cemetery association in Huntington.

“The defendant allegedly stole more than $800,000 from the two senior citizens and the not-for-profit group by acting as the victims’ accountant and writing checks to himself from his clients’ accounts,” Spota said.
