Levittown rethinks administrative roles

As the budget development process continues in Levittown, one change expected for next year is the restructuring of administrative positions in the 7,200-student district.

The district is planning to increase the number of administrators from 44 to 47, and overhaul several curriculum-related positions. The cost of the changes would be about $385,000.

Levittown currently has eight curriculum associates, who are responsible for overseeing various academic areas, primarily at the middle and high schools. Five of those people would become directors, and would be responsible for their subject area throughout the district.

An art, technology and family and consumer sciences director would oversee those areas, and also supervise the Gerald R. Clapps Career and Technical Center. The English Language Arts director would also supervise the ESL program, while the math director would also head the World Languages department.

A science director would be in charge of the new outdoor learning center planned for the Levittown Memorial site, and the social studies director would also pick up supervision of business education.

Assistant directors would be added for ELA and math. Superintendent Dr. Tonie McDonald said one benefit is that they would take on some teacher observations, freeing up time for assistant principals to perform observations in other subject areas.

Board of Education Trustee Michael Pappas asked board members to consider the addition of an assistant director for the science department. He was concerned about scores on the chemistry Regents. McDonald said that was discussed, but for the following school year.

Peggy Marenghi, the board president, said she wasn’t sold on the need for an additional position in science. “We need to make informed decisions when money is an issue,” she said. “More doesn’t make something better.”

The current World Language curriculum associate would be reassigned to a position that focuses on the coordination of district-wide testing and data collection. Curriculum associates for music and reading would remain in their positions with the same responsibilities.
