Men pose as water workers to rob Wantagh home, cops say

Posted

Nassau County police said that three Hispanic men robbed a Wantagh home on Monday after posing as “water department” workers.

Police said homeowner Vincent Sottile, 83, let them into his home on Sarah Drive after checking their identification. The men told Sottile they needed to check the water meter and sinks to determine if the water had iodine in it after a neighbor became sick.

While two men went in the basement to check the water meter and sinks, the third man, posing as a worker, made his way upstairs, where he stole $2,000 in cash and a checkbook from the bedroom. They were in the home for about 30 minutes before fleeing on foot in an unknown direction.

Police ask anyone with any information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.  All callers will remain anonymous.
