Madeline Singas has won the race for Nassau County District Attorney. With a commanding lead at about 11:15 p.m., Singas gave a victory speech at the Garden City Hotel, where local Democrats assembled on Election Night.

Singas, the acting district attorney since Kathleen Rice left for Congress in January, was being challenged by Republican Kate Murray, the Town of Hempstead Supervisor for the past 12 years. Singas wins a four-year term.

In what many predicted to be a close race, Singas finished with a 16-point lead. She had 113,110 votes compared to 82,028 for Murray.

Singas touted her 24 years of experience as a prosecutor. She has worked in the Nassau D.A.'s office since 2006, and became Rice's top deputy in 2011.

Thanking many people and groups including Rice (D-Garden City), Singas showed her appreciation for everyone who campaigned for her. “Most of all, I would like to thank all of you — the volunteers — I don't stand here alone, I stand here because of you,” Singas said.

"I don't know about you, but I'm excited about Madeline Singas," said Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams, who was re-elected in the 1st District.

“This is America," Murray said. "The people speak. They cast their votes. It didn’t go my way tonight, but I’ve never been prouder of a campaign that I've run.”

Vying to replace Murray as supervisor are Republican Anthony Santino, who is the councilman in the 4th District, and former town board member Rita Kestenbaum, a Democrat. Santino won with 60 percent of the vote.

Santino, in thanking voters for giving him the opportunity to serve the "biggest and best township in America," attributed his success to the outgoing supervisor.

"From the very first day, she set the gold standard of what municipal leadership is all about," Santino said. "We ran this year on Kate Murray’s record, and we won big because of that. I know I have a tough act to follow.”

Incumbent council members Edward Ambrosino, Bruce Blakeman and Erin King-Sweeney defeated their challengers. Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad and Receiver of Taxes Donald Clavin also were re-elected.
