Wantagh aces early tests

Katie McKeefrey has returned behind the Wantagh girls’ volleyball bench this season after a one-year absence and so far likes what she sees.

The Lady Warriors have ushered in McKeefrey’s return as head coach with a 6-0 start as they aim for the program’s first county title since 2011.

“Right away they began playing as a team,” said McKeefrey, who led Wantagh to three straight Nassau County titles from 2009 to 2011 and missed last year after having her first baby. “We’ve been having a great year so far.”

Captaining the Warriors this year are seniors Megan Pennino (outside hitter) and Alyssa Ayala (setter) along with junior Nicole Hilton (middle blocker.)

“They all play different positions and all have different roles that they bring as leaders,” said McKeefrey of her three captains.

Other key upperclassmen leading Wantagh are outside hitter Cathryn Senendinger and middle blocker Michele Steinberg. McKeefrey has also been impressed by senior Brittany McNally at libero, a position she played at Sacred Heart Academy and Marist. “She has been tremendous as far as reading the hitters,” said McKeefrey of McNally. “She has been a key player for us.”

Wantagh has also gotten production from sophomores Jillian Graham and Christina Weir. McKeefrey said the depth and versatility on the roster allows her to set up many different lineups and setups depending on matchups. McKeefrey credits JV head coach Dan O’Shea, who ran the varsity team last year in her absence, for the development of many strong players in the program.

“I can throw a lot of different players out there at a time and feel confident,” said McKeefrey.

A major factor that has enabled Wantagh’s success is its service game. Steinberg recorded six aces in a season-opening 3-0 win at Plainedge and Senendinger had four in a straight sets victory against Calhoun on Sept. 8.

“The girls have been doing a very good job on serving,” said McKeefrey. “That is our first form of attack.”
