Wantagh fire chief resigns, assistants move up

Posted

The Wantagh Fire Department has a new leader, following the resignation of Chief Jason Jackowitz last month.

Jackowitz, who was elected to a second one-year term as chief in December, informed the Board of Commissioners in March that he was resigning, only about a month after he was sworn in at the department’s installation dinner. Wantagh Fire District officials did not state his reason for stepping down.

Following department regulations, First Assistant Chief Jim Bloomfield was automatically elevated to chief of department. Assistant chiefs Joe Gross and Ken Kelly also moved up in rank.

A vacancy now exists for third assistant chief, and the Fire Department will hold an internal election in May. All terms will expire on Dec. 31.
