Competing robots, tuning into jazz and preparing for Sports Night

Hewlett’s robotics team has done it again, Innovo, one of Hewlett High School’s three robotics teams, has made it to the East-Super Regional Championships in Scranton, Pa., for the second time in two years. Nathaniel Eisenberg, Innovo’s captain, is extremely excited about this competition on March 16-18.

“We are ready to compete against some of the best teams on the East Coast!” Eisenberg said. “We are currently working on a new design option for our robot and various other features of our presentation to make our team stand out. We have been connecting with engineers and companies around the country to grasp a deeper understanding of the robotics world and we are confident in our ability to perform on game day. Our primary goal is to spread our love for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) with those around us and encourage the next generation to get involved with the STEM field.”

Beyond the world of STEM, on March 15 is one of the biggest highlights on Hewlett High’s music calendar. All District Jazz day is a unique event that fosters community and individuality through jazz from the elementary to high school levels.

Each year, a professional musician visits the district to work with the middle school and high school bands on their compositions and to conduct a jazz workshop. The workshops differ based on the guest musician. This year’s guest is Mike Carubia, an accomplished musician, composer, arranger and teacher for decades, who is going to focus his workshop on the nuances of improvisation and other fundamentals of jazz.

Around 7:30 p.m. that Thursday, each jazz ensemble will perform their set, and Carubia will weave in and out of the songs with his trumpet solos. This will be my eighth All District Jazz Day and it is extremely difficult to come to terms with the fact that this will be my last. It is an amazing day filled with music and the growth of musicianship from ages 10-18. If you have yet to experience this lively night, I highly recommend you pay a visit to Hewlett High School’s auditorium that night.

A much-anticipated event within Hewlett High is Sports Night. It is a Friday night filled with various sporting and academic competitions that promotes school spirit. The grades compete against each other in hopes of beginning named the winner and retaining bragging rights until the following year. This year’s Sports Night was planned for March 2. Unfortunately, due to the second nor’easter this month it was postponed until May 18.

Student Body President Brandon Fisher said: “It was really upsetting that the evening had to be postponed. Considering how hard the student body worked to create banners, dances and teams for Sports Night, I am relieved that it was not cancelled. We look forward to competing in May and proving that this year’s senior class is ready to win!”
