Cub Scouts learn Five Towns history at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library

Posted

Cub Scout Troop 20 visited Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library in Hewlett for a presentation on Five Towns history by librarian James Hartmann on March 8.

Hartmann regaled the scouts on the histories of Broadway and Central Avenue, how Hewlett, Woodmere, and Valley Stream all got their names, and the Battle of Long Island — a major turning point of the Revolutionary War.

Showing their youthful inquisitiveness, the scouts asked many questions, trying to stump Hartmann. The library also showed the scouts its local history archive that includes Troop 20 newsletters and yearbooks from the 1920s and 1930s.
