Horizons students dive deep into robotics

Mandalay Elementary School young engineers visit Eisenhower Park

Wantagh Horizons Program students from Mandalay Elementary School made a splash at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park, launching their remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) into water as part of an engineering unit.

After the gifted and talented students learned about density and buoyancy in the classroom, students created ROVs out of PVC pipes, bilge pipe motors, a central box battery and cameras that could give direct video feed of what was underwater.

Under the direction of Horizons teacher Renee MacDermott and marine scientist Brett Curlew, the teams of students then submerged their ROVs to collect various objects in the pool during a short period of time.
