Man drives east in westbound traffic lanes in Seaford.

An Oakland Gardens man was stopped on Sunrise Highway in Seaford at 3:35 a.m. on Christmas morning and arrested for driving while intoxicated after being observed going the wrong way.

After an investigation led by a highway patrol officer, Santiago Atehortua Gaviria, 22, was placed under arrest without incident and his 1998 Honda Civic was impounded.

The officer noticed headlights coming toward him while he was driving westbound on Sunrise Highway in Seaford, according to the police report. The officer angled his car to block all three westbound lanes while activating his emergency lights in order to prevent an accident.

After stopping Gaviria, the officer noticed that the defendant had slurred speech, unsteady posture, an odor of alcohol on his breath and glassy red bloodshot eyes.

Gaviria was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, among other violations. He was arraigned on Dec. 25 at the First District Court in Hempstead.
