NWS: Hurricane Florence roars into the Carolinas

Posted

Hurricane Florence, which marched across much of the mid-Atlantic Ocean as a Category 4 monster, slammed into the Carolinas as a Category 2 storm overnight from Thursday into Friday. It struck the coast with winds above 75 miles per hour and a wall of rainwater that caused heavy flooding, not only in beachfront commmunities but also inland.

The hurricane follows a series of three major hurricanes to strike the U.S. in 2017 — in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Florence's approach brought memories of Superstorm Sandy — which struck on Oct. 29, 2012 — back for many Long Islanders who lived through the disaster.

Last year, hundreds of Nassau County residents, from the North and South Shores, joined in relief efforts, organizing food and clothing drives for those affected by the three hurricanes.

The Herald is looking to serve as a bulletin board to help get the word out about such relief efforts that might be taking place this year to aid the victims of Hurricane Florence.
